ANCHORAGE, AK –The Purse Seine Vessel Owners’ Association (PSVOA) proudly endorses Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) for re-election to the U.S. Senate.
“Throughout his first term in the Senate, Senator Sullivan has been a vocal advocate for the “small boat” commercial fishing fleet in Alaska and the West Coast,” said PSVOA President Nick Babich. “Dan Sullivan is a proven leader in the Senate as evidenced by his record in getting important legislation passed on a range of issues that directly benefit the commercial fishing industry. Senator Sullivan’s hard work and tenacity were instrumental in the recent creation of the USDA’s Seafood Trade Relief Program, which provides financial assistance to commercial fishermen that have been impacted by trade actions of foreign governments resulting in a lower price paid for their catch. This trade assistance could not have come at a better time for many Alaska commercial salmon fishermen, and their families, who are coming off an abysmal season due to poor salmon returns and low prices.”
Senator Sullivan also worked with his colleagues to fix a rule in the Paycheck Protection Program that previously prevented fishing businesses from including their crew member payroll when applying for relief. Dan also provided Alaska fishing vessel owners with permanent relief from a confusing federal and state regulatory system governing ballast water and incidental discharges through his 2018 legislation known as the Vessel Incident Discharge Act (VIDA).
The PSVOA represents some 290 “small boat” commercial fishing vessel owners in Alaska and the West Coast. A large majority of members make their living harvesting wild-caught salmon in Alaska.
